Bellsund, Malbukta, Beluga Fishery, Whale Bones - Svalbard - 2

Beluga whale bones dating from a fishery here active in the 1930's. Belugas are toothed whales, the toothless sockets in the lower jaw can be seen in the detached jaw in the center of the picture. The larger bones are the skulls of two whales, the blowhole (actually the nostril) can be seen on top of each skull.

Belugas are large animals though medium sized as toothed whales go at about 5m (16 feet) in length and 1,000 - 1,500 kg when adult, toothed whales are small when compared to the much larger baleen whales.
